Sasuke have been working in Sakai for five generations. Situated on the outskirts of Osaka, Sakai itself has been deeply assosiated with metalwork since ancient times, making everything from swords and spears for warrior , toknives for the cook and sickles for the farmer.

The manufacture of firearms , however , came much later. Although the samurai sword is more famous, guns found a place within the country's military hierarchy sometimes more for their decorative prestig e than their ability to shoot.

In fact , the origins of Sasuke clippers and shears can be traced back to one Sadajoro , who it is thought , may have had a hand in the production of the intricate decorations on guns for those in the upper echelons of Japan's military class in the second half of the 1868,the Edo Period itself was along stable period of Japanese history, lasting almost 300 years.

During this time rank and position were, more often than not, maintained by custom and convention.

Decorated firearmes were therefore just one of the pieces of pareph ernalia, which served to express social position.

Sadajiro, however , deciced to turn his hand to more practical pursuites, when this age of peace and stability gave way to Japan's first period of modernization, and, more particularly, brought an intended drive toward Westernization.

Despite this he began making traditional Japanese forms of clippers and shears for the use of horticulturists and above all for ikebana and bonsai artists.

Our traditional scissors, shears and clippers today, basically fllow two distinctivetraditional patterns.

Firstly , there are those with wide bowing handles which ,while being elegant in the extreme , are alsovery functional.

The curious 'cross-bill' point insure that they cut the full length of the blade and compensate for sharpening as the years go by.

In addition , the handles meet when something is sheared through, to produce a distinctive metallic click, a signalof quality and anindicator of a special Japanese sense for sound perse.

The second basic type is more robust , often used by the horticulturalist of ikebana artist, who may require strength to cut through abranch or stubborn stem.

Suitably, these clippers display a more bold, rugged form which, nonetheless, has the same air of high quality common to all the various items produced at our forge in Sakai.

Today,Yasuhiro Hirakawa is the fifth generation of Sasuketo be making clippers and shears by traditional methods.

Just as in the making of a samurai sword, the same kind of high carbonsteel for the cutting edge is combined with a softer steel to from the handles.

Yasuhiro has, however, brought something new to this long tradition.

He has begun to decorate his work principally with gold and silver motifs, just as his ancestor Sadajiro may have once decorated guns.

Such intricate metal inlay work adds to the quality and appeal of the sehighly practical and yet beautifully crafted instruments.
